FAREWELL TO REV FRED MANUELL
An appreciation by Derek RB Bevan
("Century Gazette" August 1985)

Mr Manuell leaving already? Surely it's not time for him to go yet. So I pause to wonder how long he has been here. He's one of us now, and it's hard to remember a time when he wasn't. I feel as though I have known him for a lifetime. What the record says is that he came here seven years ago.

And they have been seven years in which we have learnt to apprecaiate him. He's a man of big, solid theology to match his tall solid frame. Whatever he has said has been carefully thought out, the product of a an honest, searching and reflective mind. He has never sought to make a cheap point, or to impress with hollow rhetoric.

And we have learnt to respect him as a man of peace. What he has urged has been not the courage of battle but the courage of compassion. His style has not been to mould us all in his own image, but to nurture us all so that we could all seek to be, in our different ways, the diverse group of people we are created to be. He has given his support to all signs of new life in the church, and sought to unite us. That is not a style which reaches the headlines, but its value lasts longer than headlines do.

Mr and Mrs Manuell, we wish both of you well in Bath. We will miss you. And as we bid farewell we can ponder why it is that God continues to give us a ministry that is so much better that the contributions that most of us make to the life of the church.
