Both Joy and John receive MBEs for services to
children and families. Since 1975 they have fostered 79 babies, some
coming to them only a few hours old, others upto 3 months old. Most of
the children are being looked after until put up for adoption, although
some go back to their natural parents. Some stay until they are 3 years
old. Joy told the BBC, "If we can help babies in the first stages of
their lives that means more to me than anything." The Western Mail quoted
Joy as estimating that she must have changed more than
200,000 nappies during her 30 year career as a foster mum for babies.
"I can change anywhere between 15 and 25 nappies a day. But I don't
mind, its a way of life I love". John said, "We were pleased that the
work of foster carers could be recognised in this way." Less than a week before the honour was made public, John and Joy were occupying two pews with Rachel, Rebecca and Rhiannon plus three sleeping infants in carry-cots at the Christmas Eve Christingle Service. |
