Pre-1960 decor revealed on vestry wall Wenesday February 18th 2009 |
On removing the flush panelling from the vestry cupboard doors, Geoff finds copies of the "Rochdale Observer" (Saturday November 19th 1960), and "The Times" for Monday November 21st 1960 had been used as packing. Rochdale were looking forward to entertaining Gillingham in a Fouth Division match at Spotlands (which they won 2-0). The Queen and Duke of Edinbourh had attended morning service at Luton Parish Church on the 19th anniversary of their marriage. Hugh Gaitskell had committed the Labour Party to Unilateralism; and the funeral of Gilbert Harding had taken place at St Charles Borromeo RC Church, Marylebone . These papers suggests Frank and Mary Lawton were involved in the vestry modernisation in late November 1960. Frank was one of two Society Stewards at the time and came from Rochdale. His wife Mary was from Bury. |
