Presenation of the Peace Candle

Jennifer Watkins presents the lighted Peace Candle to RevpPhilip Drake on Sunday April 22nd 2007. Jennifer had received the candle and its citation during a holiday visit to Chedder Methodist Church in Somerset.

The candle is lit by the steward immediately before the vestry prayers with the preacher and signals a time of quiet prayer, and anticipation for the coming act of worship, by the entire congregation.

The flame burns continuously during the service.

Methodism began in Gibralta in 1769 with a group of soldiers; with the first Methodist Church being built in 1809. Later a schjool and manse were added. The work amongst service personnel became focussed in the establishment of a recreation club and, in 1898, a "Welcome" home for soldiers and sailors which continues its work today as "Wesley House".
In 1997 the church in Gibralta ceased to come under the auspises of the Forces Board and became part of the London South West District, now the South East District. Sunday Worship, both morning and evening, brings local people together with those for many countries around the world as well as British visitors and members of the forces. Junior Church and a Creche meet in in the morning; and the music is led by a group who offer their gifts in the context of worship that is lively and relevant. A book-shop and vidseo library, cafe, fellowship groups, regular Alpha and Discipleship courses all add up to an active and welcoming Methodist Church in Gibralta.
