Cardiff and District Revealed by Old Postacrds by BILL TOYE |
See Poster |
Bill Toye reads to us from a published source on postal history. |
Bill
Toye (who is Archivist of the Welsh Postcard National Records Library)
shared with us his enthusiasm for all things postal. He showed us not
only aspects of the postal history of Britain which we had never even
suspected existed; but by turning the letters and cards over revealed
facinating insights into our social history. An amazing collection of artifacts franked at "Bute Docks" revealed not only evidence of postal working practice, but the development of the Cardiff docks area itself. Many postcard showed photographs of recognisable areas of Cardiff. As Bill said at one point, you cannot show old photographs of anywhere without someone saying "I used to live there". In this case it was a photograph of David Morgans store - Betty was able to point out the windows at the very top of the building where her mother used to live. Postcards showing Llanishen a century, or more, ago led to considerable debate about details still to be seen - or long gone. An interesting talk which stimulated a lively response. |
